Learning to adjust your communication style to those that you work with is an important step in becoming a better leader. Most people mistakenly believe that others think the same way they do. However, people generally fall into one of 4 district personality types. Although we may have elements of several personalities, we all have one personality that dominates. Learning what your dominant personality is, and how it relates to others, can help you to communicate more effectively with a wider range of people. The following personalities are taken from the DISC personality assessment, which is a popular and well-known personality assessment. The 4 personality types and how to identify them:

1) Compliance: The compliance personality is accuracy-oriented. They want detailed information and proof that they can rely on, and they focus on facts. They have high standards for themselves and those they work with, and often play quality control because they want to get and do things right. Compliancers are usually the protectors of existing processes and status quo, and have a hard time accepting change. They like to follow procedures and guidelines and hate to be hurried or criticized. They ask good questions because they want to understand how things work, plan everything carefully, and are looking for a thorough and logical approach to work.

2) Dominance: The dominance personality is task- rather than people-oriented. They are set on efficiency and effectiveness, are assertive and determined to get quick results. They measure their personal worth by their track record and the progress they have made in their life and career. Dominators are obsessed with productivity and the bottom line results, which is the main thing they seek from you. They want to be in control and hate to waste time, to be slowed down, or to be taken advantage of. They look for competence and confidence in the people they deal with.

3) Influence: The influencer personality is energy-oriented. They are social creatures that enjoy being the center of attention, and first and foremost, they want to be included in a group or team, placing more importance on relationships than tasks. They are spontaneous and emotionally expressive to the point of being dramatic at times, and they like to deal with people who are friendly, flexible, and lively. Optimists by nature, they see opportunities rather than challenges in every situation. Because Motivators look for positive energy in others, they dislike dealing with those who are negative, critical, cynical, or skeptical. They want to know that working with you will be prestigious and fun, and they seek from you the flexibility and quick outcomes. As they get bored easily, they do not want to get bogged down in detail. Outgoing personalities who love an audience, they hate to be ignored or rejected.

4) Steadiness: The steadiness personality is feeling-oriented. They make every effort to keep harmony, consensus, and teamwork, and in conflict situations are the ones most likely to be the peacemakers. They measure their personal worth by the depth of the relationships they have formed, and this is why they usually take a warm, caring approach, and try to avoid offending others. They are good natured, approachable and understanding listeners who value honesty, friendliness, and sincerity. They always strive to show respect and expect the same in return. In business they seek reliable and stable relationships.
